Chapter Two

Emily's eyes opened slowly, squinting against the sun already glinting in through her window. "What the hell? How did that get open?" she muttered, sitting up and rubbing her eyes. "Emily Elizabeth, you do not use that word," her mother said sternly as she popped up at the foot of the bed, holding an armful of dirty clothes. As her mother spoke, Emily gasped sharply and glared at her mother, trying not to look sleepy. "God, mum, you scared the shnikes out of me!" Emily said, laying back down, bathing in the sun. It was the first day of school for that year, 9th grade, starting high school. Her mother seemed to remember. She stood straight and beamed at her daughter. Emily had predicted this, and refrained from groaning when her mother began. "My little baby...14 years old and already in high school. You go get ready and look nice and I'll get the camera." "Mum! Mum, mum...it's just high school. Get over yourself," Emily moaned as she pulled herself out of bed. Her warm, bare feet touched the cold hard wood floor and a shiver ran up her spine. She looked at herself in the mirror across from her, and instantly raced into the bathroom to fix the frizz that was her hair. After taming it and fixing it to look presentable, she walked back into her room, now empty, to find a good outfit. It did not take long for her to have all her clothes strewn out across her floor, leaving her in a distressed state of panic on her bed. "Oh God," she said into her hands, "I've got nothing to wear. It's the first day of high school and I've got nothing to wear." She finally picked out a cute white spaghetti strap to go under her black short-sleeved tie shirt. It tied right at the chest between the breasts. Quickly pulling on a pair of dark blue jeans, she buckled a belt around her hips and fixed her shirt before leaving her room with huge golden stars hanging from her ears. "Oh hunny, you look so pretty for your first day of school," her mother cooned. "Mummy, all I want is some food before the gang gets here and I'm gone. Please?" Emily asked her mother, but she couldn't help but smile at her pathetic mum. "Yes, mistress," her mum said, laughing slightly. She held out her arms, like a zombie, and dragged herself into the kitchen goofily as Emily pulled on her black and white etnies and tied them under the tongue. All her friends had the same shoes only different colors. Her mother brought out a plate of eggs with a glass of milk and let Emily gobble it up just in time for the doorbell to ring. "Emily, you forgot to brush your teeth!" her mum called to her as she raced for the door after grabbing her black messenger bag and slinging it over her shoulder. "I'll be right, mum, I brushed 'em extra good last night. Love you! Bye!" And thus began the first day of high school for the four best friends.
