Weekly Moral Dilemma
If a friend was to tell me that he had the answers to a test and was planning to use
it, I would immediately explain why that is such a wrong choice to make. Even if he was
just using it to help plan out his answers to the essay questions it should still be
considered cheating. It is plain out wrong for him to have the test in the first place. Even
if it wasn’t my friend who took it but by having possession of it, it should still be
considered cheating for many reasons. Including that he intends to look at the questions
and the answers on the test. If my friend wasn’t intending on cheating, he wouldn’t have
accepted the test from his friend in the first place.
It should be clear that cheating in no way is acceptable. I also would have told my
friend that he needed to give the test back for reasons including that it would be obvious
someone had taken it. The teacher may easily find that he was the one who stole the test
by his answers. If a student really needed the correct answers for the test to get a good
grade the teacher would notice that it is not their own work and most likely confront
them. Also, as a friend I would not get involved because my scholastic reputation and
grades are at stake.
My main piece of advice for my friend would be to not accept the test in the first
place and since he had possession, he ought to give it back to his friend. Also give his
friend the same or similar advice that I have him. If he needed to study for the test, he
should study in an appropriate way and ask for help if necessary.
If I had the same class I would not even think about accepting the answers. I have
always found cheating to be inappropriate and unacceptable. Not only could I get in
trouble but I wouldn’t learn anything about the material and still receive a bad grade. I
believe there are no upsides to cheating in any form. Suppose I did cheat and get away, I
am sure I would feel guilty and turn myself in at any rate.
By cheating I would not help myself in anyway. Not in school or life in general.
There is no positive outcome in cheating no matter the angle you observe from and how
people can bring themselves to cheat, is something I don’t understand. In the event that a
friend is in that situation, I would do as much as I could from a far. I would advise my
friend to not cheat, and I would make sure I do not get involved in any way.
