History

hey Well, everyone, this day in history, 37 years ago, in the very building I am writing this from, the late Professor Chistiaan Barnard performed the world's first succesful heart transplant. The patient, Mr Louis Washkansky, survived for 17 days before eventually passing away from pneumonia which was a complication after the surgery. It was not in the very room my office is housed in - no, the top floor was the old psychiatric ward - but nevertheless, it was a remarkable achievement performed by a remarkable man and really put Cape Town and the University of Cape Town on the world map. Prof Barnard died last year on a pleasure cruise in the Aegean from an asthma attack. We now have a major hospital in Cape Town named after him. I don't know why I feel compelled to tell you this, but who knows when Who wants to be a Millionaire might have you as a contestant? Have good weekends, everyone. -d-
