Shawn was the only one awake in Nathan’s vast house. The only noises were the occasional distant cars, and Nathan’s soft breathing. Shawn lifts his pained body up and limps to Jamie’s door. For a while, he stands there, tracing his fingers along the door, trying to hear her; hear anything in the darkness of their hallway. His hand clutches the handle and turns it slowly to avoid a creaking sound. But the knob refused to turn. Jamie knew him far too well; she locked him out, her knowledge knowing he would try to sneak into her room. Shawn exhaled, disappointed. He felt like he lost her, like he already lost her. He stayed by her door and sat against it, his ear pressed onto the door, listening hard for any movement. Though he was there, he was gone at the very same time.
On the other side of the door was Jamie. Her eyes lay open in bed, staring at her dresser, but not exactly looking at it. Her hearing picked up Shawn’s subtle movements outside the door she refused to open. They both knew they were listening to each other, they both felt themselves awake. Jamie cried until she couldn’t hear Shawn anymore.
