At an awkward dinner table sat Shawn in Jamie’s house. Jamie was on one side of him, her mother on the other. Her father at the end of the table, with Nathan in front of him. There was silence except for the usual muttering of the dinner table. “How was your day?... Good… What’d you do?... etc.” Pointless talk. Jamie and her mother were always close, so they were talking and giggling back and fourth the table. Eventually, the stiffness faded off into a casual conversation. Jamie’s father had been engaging a conversation with Shawn. Shawn was extremely cautious of what he was saying, with the words repeating in his head, “I have to rape your daughter. I have to rape your daughter. I have to rape… Jamie.” His voice began to crack slightly, and he chugged down the large glass of water, nervously. The dinner eventually ended. Shawn thanked Jamie’s parents, said goodbye to Nathan. Then he shook Jamie’s father’s hand, his mind repeating “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.” Jamie walked Shawn out; it had been long since dark began. There was silence; Jamie knew there was something on his mind, so she kept quiet. Shawn kept imagining how he was going to do this. How he would take the girl he loved. His mind accompanied his eyes on the floor, hoping the carpet would have the answer. Her hand found his, and his heart sank below the earth. And suddenly, as if the option had just been noticed, he made his decision. He couldn’t do this. So he wouldn’t. Fuck Brian. Fuck Royce. He was ecstatic with his decision.
