Chapter 5 – The Choice By the time I got to Nathan’s, I was in tears. He answered the door and instantly knew something was wrong. “Lily, are you ok? What happened?” He took me into his room and I told him the whole story, leaving out the part about being in love with Jesse. When I finished he hugged me and told me that it would be ok, because I had him now. That got me started again. “Nathan, we can’t do this anymore. Every time I’m with you I think of Haley and what we’re doing to her, and it kills me. She’s an awesome person, and the last thing I want is for her to find out that you’re cheating on her with me, because I don’t think she’d ever forgive us. Come to think about it, I don’t think I could ever forgive myself if that happened.” I stopped for a minute, and then said the hardest thing I have ever had to say. “So now you have decide, is it going to be her or me?” He sat there for a few minutes, thinking. Then, he looked straight at me, a serious look on his face. Then he smiled. “Of course it’s you, Lily. Haley’s cool, but you and me… We have that special connection, you know?” How could I not know? It took a minute for the rest of it to completely sink in though. He had picked me! I looked up at him happily and he kissed me. I still wasn’t sure what this meant though. He obviously knew what I was thinking, because he said “I’m gonna end it with Haley tomorrow, ok?” “Ok.” I wish I had known then exactly what that would mean. I woke up the next morning and just stayed in my room all day. I tried to call Nathan a few times, but he had turned his phone off. My phone rang every once in a while, but I didn’t answer it. I wasn’t in the mood to talk to any one, especially considering most of the calls were coming from Jesse and Karen. Finally, someone called that wasn’t Karen or Jesse. It was Haley.
