Chapter 16 – …Do You Think She Saw Us? The next day, right as I walked inside the house, the phone rang. I knew it couldn’t be Nathan yet though. “Hello?” “…Lily? Its me.” It was Haley. She was silent for a minute. “Haley? What’s up?” “Do you remember how I told you about my ex Nathan, and how he slept with me and then left?” “Yeah…” I said painfully, wondering where this was going. “Well…” She hesitated. “What is it, Haley?” “It’s just…” “Come on Hale, you know you can tell me anything.” “I’m....... I’m pregnant.” A million thoughts began running through my head, most of which consisted of WHAT?! and THAT’S NOT FUNNY and how the fuck could this happen?! And oh SHIT. Then I remembered that Haley was still there. “How… What… Are you sure?” “Positive.” “Do you know for sure that it’s his?” “Well, considering he’s the only guy I’ve ever slept with, I’d say the chances are pretty good.” Only Haley could be sarcastic at a time like this. “I just thought I should tell you that, since I mean… You’ve always been there for me.” Ouch, I thought. Now I really feel bad. “ And I’m going to tell him as soon as he gets here, and I don’t know what’s gonna happen, cuz I know he’s been going out with another girl, and I just… Goddamnit, I just don’t know what to do.” She sounded like she was on the verge of tears. “It’s ok, Haley. I’ll still be here for you, no matter what you decide.” “Thanks, Lily.” “But I don’t think you should-” “Hey, sorry, but I have to go… He’s here.” She hung up. I paced around nervously for the next twenty minutes, waiting for Nathan to call me. I heard a car pull into my driveway and slide to a stop. I looked out the window. It was Nathan. He was practically running up the pathway to the door, and he looked like he’d seen a ghost. Can’t say that I blame him. The door flew open, and he ran to me. I reached out and hugged him. “Lily, I… Haley’s… oh shit…” “I know, Nathan. Haley called me right before you got there.” I said calmly. He looked up at me, and I felt really bad. He looked so lost, and he was clinging tightly to me like a little kid. “Lily, I’m so sorry, I never meant for this to happen, I never meant to hurt you, I-” I sat on the floor and pulled him down to me. “Shh, Nathan, it’s ok, It’ll all be ok, I promise.” I said, moving closer to him. “Things will all work out, and I’m gonna be here for you, no matter what happens.” I kissed him after I said this, to seal the deal. I believed what I said. Honestly, I did. I really thought that everything would work out for the best. That is, until Haley walked in.
