Chapter 15 - You Suck and That's Sad
"Go with her. You're her friend, and it's her birthday."
"But... I wanted to spend today with you."
"You spent all day yesterday with me."
"And it was the best day of my life."
"Exactly, so if you spent the day with me today, you'd be disappointed, because there's no way I could ever top yesterday. But if you go with Kaira, you'll be having a different kind of fun and you won't have to worry about being disappointed."
"But-"
"Go with her, see a movie or something, have fun. Jake wanted me to go to his place for a while today anyway."
I sighed. I could see that I wasn't going to win. "Fine, I'll go... I'll miss you though."
"I'll miss you too. Love you."
"Love you too."
I hung up.
I missed him already.
Kaira and I went to the movies and saw Two Brothers. From what we had seen so far, it was about two tiger cubs that were separated from each other when they were really young. They grew up apart and were forced to fight each other to the death when they were about 3 years old. About halfway through the fight, they recognized each other and started playing together the way they had when they were young.
"If it was my brother, I woulda killed him anyway." Kaira whispered to me with a laugh.
"I didn't know you had a brother." I said interestedly.
"Actually, I have two. Kayje is my twin; we're actually pretty close. Riko is 3 years older then me; he's the one that I would kill."
A little boy threw his popcorn at Kaira. "I wanna watch the movie!" he whined.
"Good for you!" She whispered to him loudly.
I laughed slightly. "Kayje? Riko? What the hell kind of names are those?"
She smiled. "My parents like weird names. I guess it because theirs are so plain."
"SHHHHHH!" Someone behind us said loudly.
"Oh, go SHHH yourself." I replied. "Why? What are their names?"
"Frank and Michelle."
I laughed.
An usher walked over to us. "I'm sorry girls, but I'm going to have to ask you to leave."
"What? Why?" Kaira asked, confused.
"People have been complaining about the noise."
Kaira looked over at the little boy as we left and said loudly. "You suck!"
"Aww Kaira, you made him cry!" I said when we got out of the theatre.
"Good." She said, laughing.
We went to the mall and shopped for a little while, and then I dropped Kaira off at her house and went to Nathan's.
I'd really missed him.
...He knew it, too.
Over the next few weeks, it seemed like, the better things got with Nathan and me, the worse they got with Haley. Her parents were splitting up, her new boyfriend was a alcoholic, and one of her best friends had died suddenly. I hadn't known him, but I could see how much his death was hurting her. I also knew that if the rumors about her boyfriend getting arrested were true, that would be putting a lot of stress on her, too. I thought that was the reason she seemed really withdrawn lately.
Turns out, I was wrong.
I went over to Nathan's in the afternoon like I usually did, and we started doing... what we usually do. But I could tell that he was preoccupied about something.
"What is it?"
"What? Oh, nothing."
"Come on Nate, I can tell something's bothering you. What is it?"
"It's nothing big, it's just..."
"What?"
"Haley asked me to go to her place tomorrow. She said that I had to come, and that it was important."
"Ok…"
"But if you don't want me over there with her, I won't go."
"No, if she said it was important, then you need to go. I trust you."
"You do?" he asked wonderingly.
"Yeah, I do... But don't let it get to your head." I said with a smile.
He looked relieved. We picked up where we left off, and this time, he gave me his full attention.
I left a little while later, with Nathan promising that he'd call me as soon as he left Haley's tomorrow.
I had a really bad feeling about Nathan going to Haley's, but I just kept telling myself that I had nothing to worry about; I could trust Nathan.
…I hoped.
