Chapter 17 – Your Wrong… It’s My Fault
At first, I wasn’t sure what to do. I just sat there, staring at Haley.
Then I realized that I was still holding onto Nathan’s hands. I let go and stood up.
“Haley…†I began.
Then I realized that I had no idea what to say to her.
She just stood there for a few minutes, as though she wasn’t sure what to say either. Then she spoke, slowly and carefully.
“How could you, Lily?†Her voice was startlingly calm… It scared me.
“I-â€
“I should’ve known it was you.†She said.
“Haley, please, it’s not like that, I-â€
“Shut the fuck up, Lily. I don’t want to hear it.†I stepped back slightly. I had known Haley for a long time, and I had never heard her say the word fuck.
Her voice was still way too calm.
“Please stop Haley, you’re scaring me.â€
“Go to hell, Lily. And take Nathan with you while you’re at it.â€
She turned around and walked out, leaving me standing there speechless and Nathan still sitting on the floor.
I watched her walking away through the window. She got about halfway down the driveway before she broke down. She sank to her knees, crying harder then I had ever seen anyone cry.
And it was all my fault.
How could I have been so fuckin stupid?!
I have to get to her before something happens, I thought. You never know what a person is going to do after they’ve had their heart broken.
I ran outside, trying catch up to Haley. She saw me coming and got into her car, turned it around, and sped out of the driveway before I could get to her.
She never saw the truck that was speeding down the road.
“NOOOOOOO!!!†I screamed, covering my eyes with my hands.
Nathan heard me screaming and ran outside. He stared, horrified, as the two cars got closer and closer together.
It took forever for the crash to happen. Everything seemed to be moving in slow motion. But when they finally did hit, the noise was deafening.
I screamed again and buried my face in Nathan’s chest, sobbing uncontrollably. Nathan wrapped his arms around me and we stood there, shocked. He couldn’t take his eyes off the scene.
After a few minutes though, he came to his senses and pulled me gently away. Our arms around each other, we went into the house and called 911.
I left Nathan to explain what happened and went back outside. Haley’s car was upside-down in the ditch next to the road, and the truck that had hit her was in the middle of the road, with the front end completely smashed.
If Haley and the truck driver both survived, it would be a miracle.
The Ambulance got there a few minutes later. Nathan came outside and put his arm around me as we watched the paramedics pull the truck driver out.
He was awake, and as they were helping him into the ambulance, he kept muttering over and over “I swear, I couldn’t stop, she just came out of nowhere, and she was going way too fast and wasn’t watching where she was going, there was nothing I could do-â€
“SHUT THE FUCK UP!†I yelled suddenly.
They all looked over at me, shocked.
Nathan pulled me closer and turned me around so that I was facing him.
“Lily,†he said softly, putting his hands on the sides of my face and lifting it so that I was looking into his eyes. “I know you’re really upset, but you can’t blame him for it, because whether we like it or not, this accident was not his fault.â€
“If you expect me to just stand here and let him talk about Haley like that, then-â€
“No, I didn’t expect you would, but I’m asking you to be civil about it. This isn’t his fault, it’s not anyone’s fault. That’s why it's called an accident.â€
“He was going too fast.â€
“Maybe so, but she wasn’t exactly paying attention, either.â€
“What the fuck Nathan? I’m not gonna fuckin let him insult Haley, she could be dead for all we know-â€
“Don’t think like that, Lily.†He said sharply. “We have to believe in her… Haley will be fine.â€
I was about to answer him, but then I saw that they were carrying Haley out of the ditch.
She looked really bad. I just stared at her as they walked by, speechless. She was unconscious, and covered in blood.
“Will she be ok?†Nathan asked one of the paramedics anxiously.
He looked at Nathan gravely and answered, “I don’t know kid… but it doesn’t look too good right now.â€
