Chapter 38 - Four Years Later I woke up to find my room filled with sunshine. I smiled softly when I saw it. It had been raining for the past three days, it was about time the sun came out. I got up slowly and walked over to the window. I threw the shades open and looked out to the lake below. It was the very same lake Nathan had brought me to so long ago, the lake that we had loved together. I turned away from the window and smiled at the picture that was on my nightstand. The picture was of Nathan and me, the very first time we had ever come to the lake, on the fourth of July. It was taken just after Nathan had proposed to me, and we were both grinning broadly and soaking wet, with our arms around each other. I loved that picture. I got dressed and walked out of my room and into the living room. I grinned happily at the sight of the boy who was curled up on the couch with Rocky and Orion and watching TV. He was the only boy I would ever love. “Good morning, Nathan.” He turned slightly and grinned broadly when he saw me. “Morning, Mommy.” I walked over to him and kissed the top of his head. He smiled again, a smile that was so much like his father’s. I smiled sadly as I thought of this. “Mommy?” “Hmm?” “How come it always makes you sad when I smile at you?” I ruffled his hair. “It doesn’t, I love your smile.” “Then how come you always look sad?” “Because…you remind me of your daddy sometimes when you smile like that.” “Oh…” He said quietly. “You miss daddy still, don’t you?” “Yes…Very much so.” I said quietly. “But I have you, and that makes me really happy.” I said, ruffling his hair again. he hugged me. “I love you, Mommy.” “I love you too, Nathan.” The doorbell rang a few minutes later. “I’ll get it!” He yelled. He jumped off the couch and ran over to the door. “Who is it?” He asked before he opened it, just the way I’d taught him to. “It’s Auntie Haley.” Haley called from the other side of the door. Nathan quickly pulled the door open, and Haley came in, holding Benji’s hand. Kaira followed her. Benji wriggled free of Haley, and he and Nathan ran off to play in Nathan’s room. “You ready Lily?” Haley asked me. “Yep, lets go.” I turned to Kaira. “Thanks for watching the kids for us Kaira, you’re a life saver.” “Again.” She said with a slight smile. “Yeah…Again.” I said softly, looking regretfully at the scars on my wrists. She hugged me. “Don’t worry, its no problem, you know I love those kids just as much as you guys do.” She grinned. I smiled back. “Yeah, I know. We’ll be back at around 2, ok?” “Ok, sounds good to me.” “Alright, call my cell if you have any problems.” “Ben!” Haley called to her son. When he didn’t reply, she called him again. “Benji!” He still didn’t reply. “I swear, he’s just like his father sometimes…Benjamin Jacob!” She yelled. “What?” he called back. “I’m leaving for a while, be good! Listen to your Aunt Kaira!” “Ok mom!” I headed for the door, then stopped and turned around. “Nathan!” I called. “Yeah?” He replied from within his room. “Come here and say goodbye, I’m leaving.” He ran out of his room and over to me. “Where are you going?” “Me and your Auntie Haley are going out for a little while, we’ll be back later, ok?” “Ok.” He said softly. I bent down so he could hug me. He wrapped his small arms around my neck. “I love you, Mommy.” He whispered in my ear. I held him close to me. “I love you too.” I let him go. “Now go have fun with Benji…and listen to your Auntie Kaira, ok?” “Ok, bye mommy! Bye Auntie Haley!” I opened the door and stepped out into the sunlight that was streaming down. I smiled once again as the light played across my face. Thank you, Nathan. I love you too.
