Summer Book Review, Midnight Magic

This Summer I plan to do some reading, and thus I’ve decided to do little book reviews! I thought it would be fun. The First book that I’m going to review is ‘Midnight Magic’ by Avi. It is a Scholastic Signature book. Before I go any further, I would like to recommend that anyone who is a big fan of this book to leave, especially if they are easily offended. Midnight Magic: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 I actually did not read this book from start to finish because of how much it was annoying me. It was just that bad. If the author was out to make the reader hate the main character, then they succeeded. I just kept thinking ‘you moron’ and ‘you manipulative moron’ in reference to the main character. His bashing of reason, which appears at various times within the first few chapters, I found both annoying and infuriating. The main character isn’t very realistic, one minuet he acts like an Artisan, and the next he acts like a Guardian, although he is most likely an Artisan in my opinion. I can’t believe the number of cheesy sayings the main character manages to use when he talks to people. Then there’s the extremely simple plot to this mystery. I had it figured out in the first few chapters, after deciding not to finish this book I flipped to the back, just to make sure there wasn’t some interesting twist, and I was right, there wasn’t. It was very predictable. This book does not belong in the young adult section, which is where I found it, in the young adult fiction section. On a scale from one to ten, I give this book a two, it one character that was ok and it was grammatically correct and I didn’t find any spelling errors in the part that I read. Recommendations based on temperament. NT and NF readers probably won’t like it due to how predictable it is and the main character’s bashing of reason. SJs and SP readers may like it due to the boldness and loyalty of the main character which they would probably be able to relate too, in more of a ‘oh, he’ll figure things out soon enough’ sense rather than wanting to strangle the main character for his stupidity. ~Amyelk Out
