He ordered the house special and took a spot at whatever booth looked cleanest. Shying away from glares had become an unnecessary talent the further down the road he got. It was one of the things you learned quickest on the road: always keep to yourself. To other outcasts like him, John was just a face that didn’t matter. It was a cold journey to find yourself, and nobody wanted to worry about anybody else's drama. Having had his fair share back home, John was just fine with this philosophy. The gruel was different at every stop, and he never knew quite what to expect. He took his coffee black and his eggs scrambled, and settled in with this town’s tabloid for any and all possible work he might be able to perform. These odd jobs normally carried him just far enough to find another business opportunity. Yet sometimes there was a lull in the economy of the vagrant. Recent days had been kind to him, and he had just enough for his breakfast plus a little gas for ol' Red. That truck, sad as it seemed, was all that his life was supported by right now. A thin thread with a mileage that would have satisfied the journey John still had to make ten times over. This journey, well, it was still undecided. Be it love, riches, fame or fortune John knew only one thing: no rules or stipulations, no expectations and requirements. The road was the college one could enroll in that never rejected you. The only problem was, a student was never quite done at the end of the day. As always, John hoped today might be the day he'd learn what he should learn...
