The Pillow Book, Part One

"In 10th Century Japan, a lady in waiting, Sei Shonagan, wrote, basically, about what was going on in the palace. She never left it and the only real connection she had with the outside world was through gentleman callers. The Pillow Book is a miscellany in which she writes about things she likes and things she doesn't like." Here is an entry from my "pillow book." I. Things That Brighten My Day 1. When Georgia leans on my shoulder in an affectionate way. 2. When someone says that they love me. 3. Babies, especially Leia. 4. Frappucinos. 5. Friday nights with the girls. 6. When your friend comes back to school after missing seven days, thus bringing the lunch table back to the way it once was. 7. Choral harmony. 8. When people share their pictures with me to tell me about their experience. 9. When people say nice things about me when I'm feeling down. 10. Driving, and not caring where I'm going, because it doesn't matter. 11. Drinking a Dr. Pepper while riding the back of a van, writing a journal entry and listening to Sarah McLachlan. 12. Singing. 13. Playing the piano, whether it be angry music, or pretty, serene melodies. 14. When my sister is home from school. 15. When I get to hang out with Nikki at the flea market. 16. When I get to hang out with Nikki after school. 17. When Kim and I get along like we never didn't get along. 18. When someone encourages you about how your Spanish is improving. 19. When someone you're teaching English to tells you that he considers you a brother to him. 20. When one of your dearest friends graduates, gets an award, or does something to help someone and truly means in a way that it should be meant.
