Feeling: peeved
"We don't even know how to turn it on..." --old lady in the Virtual Library, a student in the Internet class. Hahahaha. So All-State auditions were yesterday and they were just swell. Kind of. I showed up about 7:50am with Michael in tow. I brought a plastic bag of "magic juice" for anyone that wanted it--AF, Marie, Emily, and Michelle took some. We sat around talking and trying not to be nervous, and finally went upstairs. I had to sing three times. Round 1: SarahY, AF, Emily, Drew, Paddy. Ms. Sarvis from BC High School spent about five minutes helping Emily calm her nerves. Why she had them, I'll never know. Anyway, we went in the little room next to (in front of?) the audition room and proceeded to act stupid to try and get relaxed before we walked in. Paddy is fun, hee. We walked in, still nervous, but maybe better. We handed the judges (who were quite jovial later on, but not at this point) our scoresheets, and the CD began. "This is the alto starting pitch...*bong*...this is the tenor and bass starting pitch...*bong*...1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4..." Emily came in strong, and Paddy and I started with our Manly!Voices, and hopefully they were okay throughout the whole song. I couldn't really hear Sarah and AF, so I just listened to myself mostly. But overall, the song was sooo pretty. We did all our dynamics and "duhs" and "LOO-yas" and all that stuff. So in that regard, we all did just swimmingly. Then came the sightreading. Uhhh. I started out okay, there was a skip of fourth which I either got or missed but it threw me off for a few notes. And then there was a little run with an accidental and so I sang some more and then at the end I got a little fuzzy with the rhythm. So I'm thinking about a 12-15 out of 20. AF is the only one who felt just great about the sightreading. Everyone else was, "I missed one or two notes" or "I kind of grunted through the middle." Round 2: Katie, Laura, Aimée, Drew, Paddy. Paddy and I tried to calm the girls' nerves a bit. While we were singing the song, Aimée got off for a little bit, and I started following the alto line, praying she'd get back on, and she did. And uh...well, I nailed the sightreading. So pissed that I couldn't count that one. The joys of repeat quintets...they are few in number. Hee. Round 3: Kelsie, SarahF, Megan, Drew, Chris. I was the only person not auditioning in that quintet. One of the other "joys" of repeat quintets. Kelsie has a really beautiful voice in her high register. The high Gs sounded like they were floating. Then came the sightreading, which Sarah and Megan both nailed. They scared me to death, though, those girls, I mean. None of them hummed while they studied their pitches. And then I was like, "oh yeah, some people don't hum." I think if Sarah and Megan make All-State and I don't, I think it will still be worth it because I was very proud of them. I wonder if either of them could make SATB. The verdict: I think I sang the song well enough to make it (thanks to my awesome quintet--love them all, and I think that all the girls will get high high scores, and Paddy will fare well), but that I didn't sightread well enough to get the score I wanted. Maybe Ian will get a top 10 score. That would be okay too. I guess we'll find out Wednesday. In other news--Thursday afternoon, I was called down to the office to get a "message." The "message" was an envelope from Lander with a thingy that said, "official acceptance letter" on the outside. I thought, "Well, maybe this is the generic admissions envelope." So I thought of a friend with a class nearby, and the first person I came up with was Emily. So I went upstairs to waited for her outside of her classroom so she could open it with me. I got in!!! Yes, kids. Drew got accepted to Lander. How sweet it is. Megan got accepted too, and said she will go there if she doesn't get into Winthrop. Wheeeeeee. Well, they're redoing my kitchen floor so I am computerless until tomorrow, probably. Well, after I typed all that, I'm not in such a gloomy mood. Edited to add: Amanda just made an announcement about Native American Pottery over the PA in the library. I personally found that hilarious. Wouldn't you laugh if you knew the person making the PA announcements?
