Chapter 25...

Feeling: patriotic

The night was warm and dry, making her glad that she chose to just walk to the restaurant. It was only a few blocks from the apartment and she needed the chance to gather her senses before she met him. Of course this time things couldn't end the same way as last time, but silently she hoped she was going to be wrong. Her senses picked up a quiet conversation an alley away from the restaurant and she stopped walking when his name was given off. She leaned against the wall and listened quietly, which is when she realized Hallie picked up the habit from her.

"You sure this is smart? He did break if off, right?"

"Of course not! He was just confused back then and this is the perfect time to have him come back to me."

"How do you know he even has feeling for you still?"

"That night at the club said everything. By now he's ready to come back to me. I know it to be true."

She took a deep breath and quickly crossed the street to the restaurant before she lost it. When she stood in front of the door, she looked down the sidewalk, but he was nowhere to be seen. The words came back and she bit her tongue to keep the storm from staring. Her mind was racing and she knew she had become a sixteen year old again. Then she heard his voice and she looked up to see him working his way over to her.

When he stood in front of her she looked slightly at him and said "Thought you weren't showing."

He smirked and said "I know for a fact that you just got here."

She rolled her eyes and said "That's beside the point."

He joined their hands and said "Let's go."

As they walked into the restaurant, she felt herself drifting in a sea of excitement and fear. If she had heard right, this night was going to turn out the way she had hoped. When she came back to her senses, they were standing at their table and he was looking at her. She sat down without a word and watched him sit before her mind went back to work. He brushed his thumb over her wrist and watched her withdraw inward through predator eyes.

"What's wrong?"

She looked at him and said "Oh, it's uh nothing."

His mouth tightened to hold a counterattack and he said "Don't let whatever it is spoil this night. God knows you deserve it."

The smile he expected didn't even hint an arrival and she said "I'll try."

The waitress brought them drinks and said "Sir, there is a woman in the lobby asking to talk to you."

She instantly withdrew her hand and he said "Send her away. I'm busy."

The waitress nodded and as she left he heard "You should've gone."

He looked at her and said "It seems like you expect me to."

She looked away and when he took her hand he asked "What is it?"

Another waitress arrived and he said "The special please."

Once they were alone he said "Just tell me."

She looked up a little and said "Just something I heard on the way here."

He leaned forward and asked "What did you hear?"

With a sigh she said "Don't worry about. I'm being stupid by letting it get to me."

His jaw was tightening with each lie and he said "Kat, tell me what's going on."

When she felt something wrong, she looked to her right and saw the voice's owner watching them. She noticed how the woman looked at him and the fear started to take over. Her hand started to slip away, but he laced their fingers together and she looked at him. He had noticed the woman, but the way he looked at her didn't say much. The woman walked over to them and she felt trapped, as she knew what was about to happen.

The instant the woman placed her hand on his shoulder, she heard her heart pounding in her ears and she jerked her hand free. She quickly stood and made her way to where her jacket hung before she had to hear anything. When she slipped it on, she left the restaurant and headed for somewhere no one would find her. Once she was safe and hidden, she slid down a stoned wall and collapsed with her head on her knees and the storm broke.
