Ωκεανό Tale Chapter 43

Feeling: tired
The town's cheery atmosphere surrounded her as she guided Carina through the packed streets. The mare twitched her ear but remained calmed. They turned onto the old path and headed to the orphanage. Seeing a few horses outside the door, her hand tightened on the bridle and she tied Carina to a block outside the door. The mare nudged her arm and she trailed her fingers along the black face. Silently she pulled away and headed back to the door. Pushing it open, she didn't hear any noise and a frown captured her face. Glancing around the first floor, she found it empty and climbed the stairs. Hush voices came from the office and she stopped outside the closed door. She turned the knob and pushed the door open. Two men wearing regal clothes looked up and stared back at her with curious looks. "Can we help you?" She fixed them with her blue stare and said "I'd say the same thing goes for you." The first man stood up and looked at her. He rubbed his chin and she closed the door as she stepped into the room. "We saw the teaching openings." Her eyebrow went up and she glanced at the second man. He was still on the far side of the desk watching her. He had a smug look on her face and she turned back to his companion. "What is your background?" The two exchanged looks and she crossed the room. She approached the desk and the man finally came out from behind it. Opening a drawer, she pulled out an envelope and a pen. "Just who are you?" She looked up slowly and said "The one doing the interviews." The two men stared back at her with quizzical expressions and she pointed to the two chairs across from her. Slowly they took their seats and she pulled out her seat. Sitting down, she opened the envelope and pulled out two empty documents. She slid them across the desk to each of the men and leaned back into her seat. Each man took a pen and looked over to the paperwork. A knock came from the door and she looked up. The door opened and she watched Trevor step into the room. He stopped when he saw the two men and looked at her. "Eve?" She caught the two men looking back at her and she stood up. Quietly she walked around the desk and he looked up at her. "Why are you here?" He looked down at his feet and she knelt in front of him. "I wanted to be here when my friends had breakfast." She smirked and ruffled his hair. He flashed a smile and looked up at her. "Now, what is it?" "Chris hurt his arm in a fight at breakfast and needs the doctor." She stood up and asked "Did anyone call for the doctor?" He shook his head and she glanced back at the two men. They were watching with interest and she moved to the door. "I need one of you two to go fetch the doctor." "But the interviews?" "Think of this is as a trial run." The two men exchanged looks and she watched them put the papers back on her desk. They stood up and approached them. "I'll get him." She watched the man with brown hair disappear out the door and his partner linger. "I'll need your help watching the children while I see to Chris." The man nodded and Trevor caught her hand. She let him hold onto it as they moved down the hall and entered the boys' wing. She knocked on the proper door and heard the talking stop. Trevor opened the door and she followed him into the room. The blonde headed boy named Chris was sitting on his bed favoring his arm and slowly looked up at her. "Am I in trouble?" Eve looked down at him and said "That depends on how you got this." He lowered his head and mumbled "I got into an argument." She shook her head and said "Come with me." He looked up at her and climbed off his bed. She left the room and Trevor helped Chris downstairs. Quietly they entered the kitchen and she had the man help the boy onto the table. She prepared an ice pack and wrapped it in a towel. "Let me see it." The boy almost whimpered as she touched the arm and she studied the swelling around the bone. He looked away when she touched it and almost screamed when she checked the mobility. "All right." Chris looked back at her and she laid the ice pack on his arm. She turned to the man and found him watching with a calm look. "I need you to keep an eye on him and make sure that pack stays cold." The man looked at her and asked "Where are you going?" "To meet the doctor." The man took her place next to Chris and she led Trevor out of the room. They stopped by the door and she looked down at him. "Who did he fight with?" The boy smirked and quietly said "Billy." She shook her head and asked "Who started it this time?" "Billy." Smirking, she pulled the door open and stepped outside. Trevor came out next to her and closed the door. They stood waiting a few minutes before they saw the doctor approaching with the second man. The man let out a sigh when he finally stopped walking and she led him into the orphanage. "How bad is it?" She glanced back at the doctor and said "I think it's broken." The man chuckled and stepped into the kitchen. She leaned against the wall and watched the doctor approach the table. Chris stared wide-eyed at the man and the two other men pulled back. They watched the doctor check the arm and shake his head. "Boys need to learn how to play less rough." Chris smirked triumphantly and the doctor snapped the arm into place. The boy didn't have a change to scream and the doctor wrapped the arm. It was placed in a sling and the ice pack was placed over the swollen area. "I'm leaving some pain medication with Eve. You'll have to take it easy for the next few weeks." Chris looked up at him and asked "Will I get a cast?" The doctor laughed and said "That is if you don't obey my directions." Eve watched the man put his tools away and led him back to the door. He nodded as he stepped outside and she watched him head back to town. Closing the door, she found the four watching her and crossed her arms. "Class will be starting soon. Go get ready." Trevor led Chris up the steps and she looked back at the two men. "That goes for you two as well." "We'll need a place to stay." She shot them a look and said "The inn will work for now." The two nodded and followed her through the first floor to the class room. It rested in the back corner of the building and had all the supplies waiting for use. She watched the two unpack their items and arrange them on the desk. "Who is teaching what?" The brown head looked back at her and said "I do history, english, and math. Joe here does reading, science, and physical education." She saw Joe look up and nodded. The two men smirked and continued preparing their stuff. "I'll need a copy of your teaching plans on my desk by lunch." She left the classroom and walked up the stairs. The children were coming down the hall and stopped when she reached them. "Do we really have teachers?" She nodded and said "They're waiting downstairs for you." The herd raced past her and she listened to their voices as they grew distant. Shaking her head, she walked to her office and left the door open. Moving over to her desk, she sat down and picked up the papers left for her. Her eyes narrowed at the names and she leaned back in the chair. She wanted to rest for a few minutes but knew she didn't have the choice. Opening her drawer, she pulled out a private list and looked over it. Marking off the school, she found several more tasks she had to complete before the summer came. Closing her eyes, she put the pad away and shut the door. Every time she thought she may just pull this off she realized just bad the situation still was. Laughter came from downstairs and a smile captured her face. 'Maybe it will work out in the end.'
