Dreamland IV - #5

I walked through a small town on the way to the main castle. There was only one man outside, who didn’t recognize me. He walked towards a circular well in the center of the town and filled his bucket. "Sir." I said. The man turned from the well and looked at me. "What can I do for you?" he asked politely. Well, I actually wanted to quench my thirst for blood, but this guy was too nice to kill. I gulped and stood from my seat on a tree stump. "I’m going to need your help." I said. "With what?" the man asked, confused. I recalled exactly what the commander of the last outpost had told me, and I told him. He stood in silence for a few moments, as I waited for a reply. "The guards are really going to do that?" He asked. I nodded. "And anybody who stands in their way will be killed." I said grimly. He looked horrified. "And what do you want me to do?" He asked. "I need you to go around to other towns and cities and villages around the area and get every able bodied man and boy ready for war. If we’re going to stop the onslaught of the guards, we’re going to need an army." I said. He nodded. "And why do you care about us so much?" He asked. I smiled, baring my fangs, and he took a step back. "I am the last surviving member of an order dedicated to ridding the world of evil." I said. He nodded. I think he believed my story. He nodded. "I will do what I can, and we’ll have an army to beat the bastards." He said. I nodded and grinned. "What’s your name vampire?" he asked. "I am Marius." I said, holding out my hand. "Bishop. David Bishop." The man said, shaking my hand. I smiled again, baring my fangs. He took his hand back and he turned around. "We’ll have an army to beat those bastards when I’m done." He said, sounding very determined. He ran to a distant fencepost where a horse was tied. He hopped onto the horse’s back and rode off into the darkness. I stood there, and a boy walked towards me. "Are you the leader of the order of vigilantes?" he asked. I looked down at him with a look of confusion on my face. How would a small boy know about something like that? "Yes." I replied. He looked up at me with a big, goofy grin on his face. "We found something of yours, and we decided to give it back." He said. I was really confused now. As far as I know, I didn’t have anything to leave behind. "Alright..." I said. "Follow me." He said, and started running towards a home in the back corner of the village. He opened the front door wide open and left it open for me. I walked inside and looked around, and there, on the mantle above the fireplace, was my old suit of armour. Whoever had found it had cleaned it up really nice, and had left it in the exact condition I would have wanted it in. I walked towards the mantle and ran a hand over the smooth, black metal of the suit. "Who would have kept such a thing?" I asked myself. "A friend who knows you more than you think he does." Kendrick said as he emerged from the darkness of the room. "How did you know I used this suit?" I asked him. Kendrick shrugged. "I just found it. But there was somebody else who lives here that identified it." He said. I looked around and saw the captain of my army emerge from the darkness as well. He had certainly changed since the great war of Dreamland. He was a new captain with minimal experience, but now he looked like a battle hardened soldier like I was. He had a scar running down his left eye, and his hair was shorter than it was during the war. He wore a suit of armour similar to the one I had just been returned, but still wore the red cape of a captain. He reached out with his metal-gloved hand. I shook it and pulled my hand back. He nodded at me. I gave him a nod of respect back. "How’ve you been?" He asked me. "I’m doing fine, you?" I replied. He nodded. "I’m doing ok. I miss the good old days though, when we were out there leading an army of men around for the future of the Dreamland." He said. His name came back to me. Edward Taylor. I smiled and nodded. "Those were good days." I said. He smiled back. "So what’re you here for?" I asked him. "Me and my men caught word of what the guards were planning, and we were disgusted that the guards, who are supposed to protect and serve the public would do something like that. So I gathered every veteran of the war and some others who wanted to fight to my cause and we rebelled. I have an army that matches two thirds of their strength, and we are all ready to fight." Edward explained. I nodded. "And I have a man gathering some more men to us. By the time we are done we should have an army that meets their strength, if not overwhelms it." I said. He continued to look at me. "What?" I asked. "Well, it wouldn’t be the same without you leading the attack." Edward said. Kendrick nodded. "So you want me to lead the attack?" I asked. They both nodded. "We need someone like you behind us." Kendrick said. Edward nodded. "I’m just a vigilante. I’m no use." I said, turning towards the door. Edward grabbed a handful of my trench coat and ripped it from my shoulders. I glared at him, tempted to suck every drop of blood from his body. "Don’t give us crap like that. You’ve led men towards death and victory before, and by god, you’ll do it again. You’re a good soldier and an even better leader. We need someone like you leading this battle, or we’ve lost already." Edward said. I turned towards the suit of armour. I pulled the upper body armour from the mantle and looked at it before I started putting it on. This was truly my destiny. Wearing a familiar suit of armour and leading men to their doom, and some to glorious victory.
