Dreamland IV - #8

I wake up around sunset, and make sure I still have all my gear with me. I hear hoof beats approaching from the direction of the guard’s castle. I pull out my katana, but see it is only Edward riding towards me. He nears me and hops off his horse. He looks worried. I frown as I put my katana back into its sheath. "What’s wrong?" I ask. He looks at me, staring at me with his sleepless eyes. "We might not live through this next battle." He says. "Why not?" I ask. "The contraptions we heard about, the ones the guards were building, they’re moving them out to use them against us. They’ve got catapults, another army of archers approaching…and their army has doubled in size. I think they’ve pulled troops from the outposts around here." Edward explains. I nod. "So there’s no hope for victory." I say silently to myself. Edward looks to the ground as the blackness of night surrounds us. "Well, the men do not know that. And they will surely follow us into battle anyways. As long as we retain our fierceness on the battlefield, we will emerge victorious." I say. Edward looks at me. I run out of the forest to the top of the slope where the men are waiting for me. The army of guards quickly rushes out of their castle and assembles in front of it. They prepare for battle, and I see the small army of archers take up positions on the castle walls. "Men!" I shout. The men turn their attention from the now assembled army of guards to me. They look at me with worried looks on their faces. "The enemy now has a larger army. They now have archers. They now have the contraptions they’ve been building in their basement. But they do not have a cause to fight. They fight because they are ordered to. They fight to quell a rebellion against some farmers and old guys. But we have one advantage over them. A cause to fight! You are not fighting because I am ordering you to; you are fighting against overwhelming odds for your freedom! As free men you fight! And as free men you shall die!" I shout, pulling my katana from its sheath and holding it high into the air. They respond by raising their swords into the air and shouting back at me. I turn towards the army of guards, and as if on queue, they start marching towards us. "Ready men!?" I shout. They yell. Edward stands beside me. Beside him is Kendrick, and beside him is David. "Charge!!!!!!" I yell at the top of my lungs before I run down the slope towards the army of guards. The army I lead runs with me, and as our armies near each other, the archers on the castle walls start firing arrows into our army. We run faster to close the distance between the two armies, and we clash. I swing my sword from left to right, killing anything around me. The men join me in battle, and we force our way through the first few ranks of the enemy army. The two armies become one, and death is everywhere around me. A guard rushes at me, and I ram my blade through his gut, spilling his blood onto the ground. The wrench my sword free and just manage to take out another guard as he rushed at me. I slash downwards across his chest, and his blood arcs through the air, landing on some soldier some distance away. He is replaced by another, whom I quickly slay with a quick swipe across the neck. His head flies from his shoulders and lands on the ground not too far away. A soldier runs at me, yelling like a madman. He swings his blade at my head. I duck and I hear the whoosh of his blade just missing my neck. I stop as he finished his swing, and quickly bring myself and my blade up, slashing upwards across his mid section. His blood arcs through the air as well. He drops, and is replaced by another. I bring my blade around and stick it into the side of his neck. Blood spurts from the wound as I pull my blade from his neck and he drops. Blood continues spurting from the wound as I step onto his neck and keep running into the army of guards. Several surround me, and before they act I swing my blade around, taking one of their heads. They stop and are about to attack me, when Edward runs from behind me and takes one out as he continues running deeper into the army of guards. The last one looks scared as he attempts to fight me. He swings his blade at me, and I block his shot. I force his blade into the ground and backhand him across the face. I bring my blade back up and slice the front half of his face off. Blood spurts and flows from his head as his faceless corpse falls backwards. I turn around, bringing my blade with me, taking another guard across the gut. Blood arcs from the wound as I kick his corpse down and cut another guard’s head from his shoulders. Around me, the battle rages on until the guards bring out the catapults from their castle and start heaving boulders at our feuding armies. At this stage, I don’t think the guards care if they kill some of their own; they just want to stop us. A big guard rushes at me, and he looks quite different from the others. He looks battle hardened, with broad shoulders, and a scar running down the left side of his face. He looks me over with his one good eye and glares at me. "You will die vampire!" He shouts, and then rushes at me. He swings his blade at me, and I block it with my own. The impact rattles my bones, and he smiles a toothy grin. I grin as well, confusing him. I bring my unnatural strength to bear and shove him backwards, sending him to the ground fifteen feet away from me. He knocks a fellow guard down, and a boulder from the catapults lands on them both, spraying blood outwards. I grin and slash a guard down who was running at me, and after a sick noise he drops to the ground, blood flowing from his wound. A boulder lands near me, crushing several guards and one of my own men. I rush forward as a boulder flies down at me, taking out guards as I run. I fight my way through the battle to the four catapults in a line in front of the castle. One of them men operating the one nearest to me see me and panics. I grin and run towards the catapult. The nervous guard fumbles for his sword, but I take off his head before he has a chance. He bounces off the wooden frame of the catapult, and lands softly on the ground beside me. I grin as the other three men operating the other three catapults run back into the castle and barricade the gate. I turn back to the battle, and my men are marching to meet me. I look behind them to see a battlefield strewn with the bodies of guards. I grin as Edward walks up to me, an exhausted look on his face. "We did it." He says. I give him a friendly slap on the shoulder. "Yes we did. But there is one thing left, we must take the castle." I said. Kendrick sheaths his sword and walks towards me. "And how do you propose we do that?" He asks. I look towards the catapults and smile. "I have an idea."
