He threw a rock along the water and watched it skip four times before it sunk to the bottom of the water. A sigh escaped him and he sat on a fallen trunk nearby. When he closed his eyes, he heard sirens in the distance and he looked over his shoulder. An ambulance flew by him and he walked up to the road. Then he walked over to his car and got in.
When he started the engine, his radio came on and he heard a new police report come over the airway. It was an abuse case out in the country and the victim was being rushed to the ER. He pulled onto the road and started driving as the report went more in depth. A red light appeared in front of him and when he stopped the car, he heard the name of the victim's mother. Everything stopped at the mention of that name and he immediately changed course to the hospital.
The instant he pulled into the parking lot, he saw Sun getting out of his jeep and meeting someone at the entrance to the hospital. He got out of his car and quickly made his way into the hospital. When he saw the two practically run down a hall, he felt his pace instantly become slow. It felt like eternity as he walked down the hall. Finally he reached the door to the room and he stopped outside the window.
He watched Cheri hug Sun and they started talking about something. Stef left them and walked behind the curtain. When Sun stepped behind the curtain, he felt everything stop. Cheri collapsed into a chair by the window and Stef returned to her side. She whispered something and the woman slowly got to her feet.
They headed to the door and he quickly slipped into an empty room before he was seen. When they disappeared at the end of the hall, he slipped out of the room and faced the room in front of him. With a deep breath, he slowly opened the door. The moment he closed the door, he listened to the monitor behind the curtain and slowly walked over there. He pulled the curtain back enough to step in and then he froze.
Seeing her broken body lying in the bed with the machines hooked up to her made him go weak and he sat down. Then he looked at her and saw her slowly stir from the sleep. When her hand moved, he held it in his and looked up at her disfigured face. Her eyes opened a little and he held his breath as she looked at him. Not a sign of recognition appeared on her face, but he knew that she did see him and knew who he was. The monitor continued beeping and he slowly removed his hand from hers.
When he looked back at her, he found her sleeping again and he got to his feet. He walked away from the bed and quietly slipped out the room. As he walked down the hall, Cheri saw him and she stopped walking.
She looked at the retreating man and asked, "Is that who I think it is?"
Sun looked at him and sighed, "I guess he heard the police report."
