The timer broke through the silence and everyone placed their pencils down while passing their tests to the front. All the tests were placed on the front left desk and everyone began to escape the room. As she grabbed her books, she looked up and saw Professor Daniels watching her. Kari ran over to her and this caused her to look away, which she was grateful for. The woman was wired from the test and it was time to be getting out of the room.
When she turned her test in, Kari whispered "Hey, has he asked about your vacation?"
She glanced at the professor and whispered "Unfortunately yes."
Kari smiled and said "That's great!"
Kat could've killed her right there and they heard "It's nice to have some life left in some people after vacation."
Kari snickered and said "Um, I gotta run. Talk with you at home, Kat."
Before she could protest the woman was out the door and long gone. She let out a sigh and picked up her bag and books. She walked to the front of the room and headed to the door.
"May I have a word with you?"
She gritted her teeth without him noticing and said "I have a few minutes before I have to get to work."
She walked over to his desk and he asked "Did you find the test easy or difficult?"
She could've laughed at the question, but she simply said "It was actually a little challenging. Thought you never had a mean streak in you."
Instantly she regretted saying that and he chuckled "You are rather quite a woman. I can't believe you don't have the guys all over you."
She looked at the window and said "I do, but I don't think about it."
She looked at him and said "I've got to get to work."
He nodded and said "Make sure to do the assignment for next week and I expect it to be rather interesting."
Kat nodded and quickly left the room before her nerves went into overdrive big time. She instantly felt all the pressure leave when she stepped out into the sunlight and she let out a sigh. She looked around the campus and watched many students running off for the weekend. With some relief still lingering, she walked to the sidewalk and made her way to her job. As she headed up the office stairs, she thought she felt someone watching her but she ignored the sensation.
When she entered the building, she dropped her books and bag in her office and reported to Travis's office. He was leaning back in his chair with the phone set on and enjoying a cold beer. The man never wore clothes a co-manager should wear, but instead he wore a pair of baggy jeans and a black t-shirt with a Nike mark on the front. His hair was unruly long and resembled the hair of a black bear. She cleared her throat and he put his beer down instantly.
She rolled her eyes as he got to his feet and then he said "Welcome back. He's waiting."
Kat nodded and followed him down the hall to their boss's office. When she closed the door, she watched Travis sit on the side couch and she sat in a chair. The chair behind the desk spun around and she looked at her boss. He seemed like he had aged ten years while she had been gone and she knew the next assignment was going to be a hard one. An envelope was slid across the desk to her and she opened it up.
Inside she found a police file, birth certificate, recent medical reports, and a picture of a young nine-month-old girl. She had amazing hazel eyes and her hair was dark brown for an infant. A smile was showing clearly on her face and she had little child dimples that added an angelic look to her. Kat looked up at her boss and waited for an explanation.
He rubbed his neck and said "That little girl was found three days ago. She was found in an empty car with these papers and one blanket."
She narrowed her eyes and asked "You don't know where Mom is hiding at or who the dad is?"
He shook his head and said "No and the police don't have anything to go on. Therefore, we need someone to take her in while we dig something up to locate the parents."
Her eyebrow went up and she asked "Who do you have in mind?"
Travis coughed and she heard "Well you."
She heard a pin hit the floor twice before she could ask "Are you insane? I'm only twenty-two! I can't watch over this baby."
She stood up and Travis said "All the other employees either have kids or they are homing a kid right now."
She turned to him and said "I will not do this."
Her boss stood and said "It's take her in or lose the job and the chance of her getting to live."
Her eyes flashed for one second and then she growled "Fine. Just let me notify my roommate."
He shook his head and said "Already done. I left a message for her just before school ended. Now, the child is in the nursery sleeping. I intend to see her off."
Kat rolled her eyes and followed the man out of his office while her eyes remained on Travis. He was avoiding saying one word and she was rather glad at this moment. They stopped at her office and she gathered up her school stuff before they proceeded to the nursery. When they entered, she found Kari holding the infant with the blanket wrapped around the sleep baby. With a quiet sigh, she nodded to Kari and they left the nursery.
When they left the office, Kat swapped her stuff for the baby and then they headed home. The walk was a quiet one and when they reached the apartment, Kari took the baby so she could put her books and bag up. She found the TV remote and started looking at the sales going on for infants. Once she found everything she needed, she turned the TV off and left her room. She found Kari warming up some milk and she shook her head.
Then Kari said "Oh! You don't need to get anything from the store for her. I had your professor pick the stuff up when I met him in the store. He'll be here soon."
Kat groaned and asked "Are you trying to kill me?"
Kari shook her head and said "No, but I do think this will do you some good. Now, why don't you take her and start tending to her so she'll bond to you and not me. I ain't no mother figure."
When the baby was in her arms, she walked over to the couch and sat down while watching the child sleep. It made her remember how she had felt when she had held a newborn baby of a family that was friends with hers a long time ago. The doorbell rang and she looked up just as Kari let Daniels into the apartment.
