Ωκεανό Tale Chapter 38

Feeling: tired
The morning sun rested on her face and warmed her chilled skin. She walked quietly down the gravel path with Trevor and Kara behind her and stopped outside the stable. She looked back at the two and saw a certain animal sneaking a peak from behind the boy's leg. "I thought I told you to leave him here." Trevor shrugged and said "He wouldn't listen." She smirked and walked into the stable. The horses were munching on their food and she approached Carina's stall. The mare let out a yawn as she approached and unlocked the door. Quietly she walked the horse outside and saddled her for the trip. Adjusting the bridle, she patted the black neck and looked back at the kids. Trevor came up first and she helped him up into the saddle. Kara went up next and she slid into the saddle between the two. Kara sat comfortably in her lap and Trevor held on to her waist. Tanner stretched his longer legs and she nudged Carina. The mare took off down the gravel path and they trotted toward the open hills. Silently they crossed the open grass and stopped overlooking the hill. She heard the early risers moving about down in the valley and took a deep breath. Quietly she guided the mare down the hill and brought her to a stop outside the gate. One of the guards approached and took Kara from her lap. She swung to the ground and helped Trevor down. As the guards questioned the children she tied the reins and rubbed her hand over the mare's face. "We'll be back tonight." Carina nudged her hand and she left the mare. Tanner walked by her side and she collected the children. Quietly they walked through the town and stopped outside the orphanage. Kara looked up at her and asked "Are we staying here?" She shook her head with a smirk and knelt down in front of her. "A young girl asked for you two to come visit." Trevor smirked and said "Then let's go." Eve watched him lead his sister back into the old building and she took a deep breath. Tanner stayed by her side and she scratched his ear. He looked up at her and she nodded. Quietly they entered the orphanage and heard the children laughing. She found the siblings catching up with all their friends and looked around the place. Debris laid everywhere and she pulled out a pair of gloves she snuck out of the kitchen. Slipping them on, she began pulling the debris out of the corners and carrying the pieces outside for examination. Tanner trotted along side her and she laid out a few boards. Finding them in fair condition, she stacked them to the side and stood up. "Can we help?" Looking back over her shoulder she found the children watching her and nodded. They smiled and she broke them up into groups depending on age. She heard the laughter grow as they were put to work and she shook her head. A pair of footsteps caught her ear and she glanced back toward the town. The doctor was making his way with a bag of supplies in his hand. He stopped next to her and said "I see you made it." She shot him a look and he chuckled. He knelt down and opened the bag. She found stacks of clothes and shoes packed inside along with the folder of information. "I also managed to con some other people into helping us out." She took the folder and began flipping through it again. He dusted his pants off when he stood and she looked back at him. "How?" He smirked and said "It seems some people agree with you." She put the folder aside and said "I won't be responsible for them." He nodded and watched her head back inside. She found the children working in groups to remove the debris and gathered some boards. Following the line outside, she laid her boards down and waved Kara over. The girl skipped over to her and had a big smile on her face. "I want you to keep watch on the debris. If it looks like any of these, then have them stacked with the first stack." Kara nodded and asked "What about the bad stuff?" She smirked and said "Bonfire down on the beach tonight." The girl laughed and she stood up. Hearing voices approaching, she looked down the road and found some citizens making their way. She stood her ground and met the local tavern owner, the clothes lady, the butcher, and the librarian approaching. They each had bags strapped onto their backs and laid them on the ground when they stopped. "We're here to help you out." She studied them and said "Let the children fill you in." The four looked at each other but slowly agreed. She walked back into the building and continued to haul debris out. The group of workers eventually began to grow and by lunch break, there were twenty adult workers along with all the children and Eve. Trevor was sitting on a board eating some food when he heard horses approaching. He looked up and found Oric approaching with Tempest and Abigail on another mare. They stopped their mounts and swung to the ground. He watched them quietly approach and held his ground. Abigail looked over his smudged face and asked "Where is Eve?" He kept quiet and glanced up at the cook. The man had a small smile on his face and was studying the work going on. Some children ran out of the building and were carrying some remaining boards. The librarian was spotted walking up a hill with a roll of paper under his arm. Oric found the man talking to Eve and chuckled. "I think she is discussing plans for the new building." Abigail followed his line of sight and sighed. She shook her head but couldn't fight back the smile. "So why are you here?" They looked back at Trevor and found him looking up with a serious look on his face. Oric smirked and said "Just wanted to know what you three were up to." He crossed his arms and the old man laughed. The boy had been studying Jonathan a lot and apparently was picking up some of his traits. "I think you should go back." "Trevor." He lost the serious look on his face and looked over his shoulder. The three watched Eve approach with the roll of paper. "I don't want them slowing us down." She ruffled his hair and said "Everyone is welcome to help." He kicked at the dirt and mumbled an apology. Oric laughed and the boy looked up at him. "It doesn't matter. I'd be just as serious if I were you." Trevor smiled again and took off toward some of his friends. Eve watched him leave and let out a restrained sigh. "How are you feeling?" She looked back at the two and found some worry on their faces. "I'm fine." Oric snorted and said "You look worn out." She shrugged and said "Well you can relay the message, even if you don't believe it." Abigail frowned but the cook laughed. He could see how stubborn this woman was going to be about healing. "I will." She smirked and asked "Here for errands?" The man nodded and said "That was the plan, but you stole the main lot of merchants." Abigail smiled and said "I'm glad to see this finally being done." Eve looked back at the building and nodded. The prints rested in her side and she prayed this would work. The men drew them and said the new building would be much sturdier. "Eve?" She looked back at the two and Abigail took a deep breath. The woman slowly met her gaze and she knew what she was about to ask. "If I strain myself it will not be your fault." The woman smiled and said "I know but I'd still get the cold punishment." She laughed and said "Don't worry about that statue." The two laughed and she said "You better head back into town. I'll send the merchants you need in." Oric caught her shoulder and gave a strong squeeze. She watched them mount their horses and head back into town. Feeling the afternoon breeze on her face, she glanced at the ocean and fought back a smile. She turned to the work in front of her and took a deep breath. They had a few hours of work left before everyone would turn in for the night.
