Feeling: pleased

We went to the Uni's Shut Up and Dance - Romeo and Juliet Hip Hop.

It was cool because it was all...modern, like todays world. The two rival familes were rival gangs. They were texting in order to hook up discretly and hide their forbidden love and ultimately it was a miscommunication or lack of signal with texting that caused the end result of their deaths. Kind of a cool modern day twist. It's interesting tho I've realized... with the world changing so much marriage isn't such a tradition or sacred thing anymore, but in this play/hip hop they still had a whole marriage scene.

It was kinda confusing cuz they didn't do hip hop the whole time. One gang did hip hop and the other ended up with more of a latin type dance/music. And then the whole lovey dovey scenes were contemporary and it was just all...mixed up. I -love- contemporary so I enjoyed the lovey dovey intimate scenes. Its just a slower and closer dance and if they do it well enough you can -feel- the emotion they have/dancing to whether they are saying goodbye or just reuniting or whatever.

It wasn't really a ...kid friendly show of course turning Shakepeares tradegy into a modern day blood bath, but they did some good effects. They had a blood pack to burst when one of the gang members got stabbed. They had the gun sound effects. They did the whole hard-ass thing putting guns barrels directly on others heads. Whats up with that? They had the abusive situations an' all. I just wouldn't think it'd be good for kids... And when Juliet shot herself in the end they did the sound effect and shut out all the lights. hah Kinda weird that it..felt so real with todays world, it felt so ridiculous seeing it on stage, but knowing that its really what happens today.

There was one part where the boys did the whole nice formal almost appropriate latin dancing and then the girls come out and did the down and dirty hip hop dance. Awesome.

I liked it. The most...interesting and slightly weird scene was when he discovered her dead body and he did this whole dance -with- her completely limp. It was slightly ...awesome that he could do that, but slightly weird that he'd...dance with his dead wifes body. Slightly seductive.

I couldn't tell if the boy liked it or not or if he was just patronizing me. *shrugs* I'm not sure it matters. I think one of those dancers were from So You Think You Dance? I'm not sure. But I think that's what all the hype was about with this production. I like to see talent, mainly the talents I don't possess, which is well, any talent.

The fight scene between Juliet and like...ex bf or whatever was hot. In the end she kicked his ass, of course. Prolly inspired the fight I started later that night with Evan before bedtime....

"Hey Juliet, I think your fine, you really blow my mind, maybe some day you and me can run away. I just want you to know I wanna be your Romeo! Heeeyy Juliett! Hey Juliet!"
