Wow, so close to three hundred entries. I think I ought to start puting them on my flash in case this site ever crashes or something. Anyways, so last night was the debate tournament at Davis. It was...ok. I totally owe Kayla cookies, she didn't really want to come, and she ended up giving up work hours to come, she had three people ask her to work for them. It was pretty crappy, actually. Our first round was kind of abusive, our opponents used new stuff in their last speech. After the round we went back to the Sky View area where everyone was hanging out, and Anthony, the very asthetically pleasing Davis boy, came up behind me and scared me. Except at first I didn't know it was him. I'd seen Dave Jenkins walking towards me with his guitar, and so I thought it was him, so I kinda snapped at the person who'd poked me, only to turn around and find out that its Anthony instead. That made my day though, the fact that he came to find me to talk to me. He hadn't done that before. He asked how my first round went, so me and Kayla told him how abusive they'd been. We talked for a while, Kayla went off and did her own thing. We got on the subject of marching band, and he said that he's wanted to do it (he mentioned having seen our band and been excited for us). So aparently he's a freshman...but he totally doesn't look like it. Second round went a LOT better, although our opponents were still a little abusive, and also brought up new information in their last speech, but their abuse wasn't nearly as bad as the first round. Then came the third round, and oh my heck, I've never seen a round so abusive. We had a lay judge, which means that the judge had never done it before, and had no clue what she was doing. Our opponents took advantage of that by bringing up new stuff in their last speech, saying that we'd never attacked any of their points and that we'd dropped our arguments on our own points. WE did NO do that. They also tried to take away Kayla's last speech. They'd asked her for evidence in the grand cross (last questioning period of the round) and kept asking her questions so that she couldn't get it and find what they wanted. They would ask us a question and we'd say maybe three or four words and they would interupt and ask us how that had to do with what they just asked us, and never let us get our point across as to what they asked us. It ws so abusive! Anyways, back to them trying to take away Kayla's speech. So it was her last speech, and they'd told Kayla she could give them the evidence they asked for at the end of the questioning period. She gets ready to give it to them, and they tell the judge that since Kayla didn't give them her evidence during the g.c, she had to forefit her speech, which is not in the rules, they were just trying to get things worked out to their advantage, and trying to keep her from giving her speech is highly abusive, which an experienced judge would know, and as such they would not win the round. As it stands, I don't know if we did win that round or not. Uggh. It was so rude. I don't like abusive people. Especially in an event that is supposed to be "conversational" and "laid back" and "reserved". Instead they were being rude, and excessively agressive to the point of biting (verbally that is). It was ridiculous. I can't wait to see our ballots. Good heavens. At least I got Anthony's email. Something good came out of the night.
