Listening to: No More- The Goodbye Girl
This entry will not be short. This entry will be long. This entry isn't easy for me to write because it means I am not in New York City anymore. It means that my trip is over, but it's also fun to write because I can always remember some of the most life changing things of my life. Let's do this chronologically:
March 27,2005- At 10 pm, our bus departed from Town Theatre. I started the trip out next to Keith. After 30 minutes I was already asking the dreaded question 'Are we there yet?". I tried to entertain myself with the ipod, but anticipation made music boring.
I went to the back with Hannah, Catherine, Ivey, and Kelsey for awhile, but then the first three started reciting lines from Harry Potter so I left..fast.
We stopped twice that night I think, once in North Carolina and then again in Virginia(I really needed that stop and it felt like it was never going to come haha).
I slept for like an hour, then we went to Baltimore for breakfast. I didn't eat because I didn't want to get sick. I found out Baltimore is in Maryland..not New York. Wow.
I slept a little bit after Baltimore, but not much. Finally, we were there. The first thing I saw to sort of tell me where I was would be a sign for Hairspray. The excitement of New York City was suddenly right outside of the window. I wanted to just jump out and walk the rest of the way to the hotel.
When we did get to the hotel, we put our bags into Jimmy and Dedra's room, and were allowed to do what we wanted. Lou, Mrs.Miller, Mary, Kirby, my mom, and I went to Blimpie's for lunch. I didn't really have an appetite because I was so ready to walk around the city and explore. While we were in Blimpies this guy(or maybe girl) sat there and burped really loud. It was rude. We laughed.
My mom and I dispersed from the group, and went to the Ambassador Theatre and got tickets for that nights performance of Chicago. We got 9th row.
After we got the tickets, I spotted a church next door. It was St.Malachy's Catholic Church, but that's not what intersted me..underneath the title it said 'The Actor's Chapel'. I insisted my mom take me in, and just to let everyone know I am not an extremely religious person, i am religious, but not that much. I prayed that 1. everyone would have a wonderful spring break, 2. God would help me make it to Broadway, and 3. I would meet Sutton Foster. I know that those are selfish prayers, but I couldn't help it.
After that, I dragged my mom into the Food Emporium which is a grocery store because I wanted to make sure that NYC grocery stores aren't a lot different. They aren't.
Then, we just sort of went into little gift stores then back to the hotel. We got ready for the show, and went to the Celebrity Deli which was inside of our hotel. We sat under an autographed picture of Grace Kelly. I ate a slice of carrott cake, it was really good. That restaurant has a mininmum amount of money you have to spend. eek.
Chicago was good. It was my 2nd time seeing it, so there weren't any surprises. We saw an understudy for Roxie and Billy Flynn, but I thought they were both very good. Near the end, Roxie got a tear in her tights which I thought was hilarious. The velma was a black girl named Brenda Braxton and let me suggest that you need to see her if you get the chance, she was awesome.
After Chicago, we decided to just eat at the Celebrity Deli because we were tired. I had a chicken salad sandwich but I didn't like it. I slept very well that night.
That morning, we all gathered in the lobby. We got on the subway for Chinatown. I had never been to Chinatown, and I entertained everyone with my version of Funkytown: 'won't you take me to chinatoown'.
You know, the subway is a very wonderful invention. Genius.
So, Chinatown. At first, I was dissapointed because all of the fake purses sucked. But then I went into one of the stores and Keith asked about Prada. Before I knew it, we were shoved behind a secret door into a closet. There they were. Dooney and Bourke, Prada, Gucci, etc. And guess what everyone! I BARGAINED. I got a Louis Vuitton originally priced at 25 dollars and got it for 20..okay so I'm a rookie. Once I chose my purse, they shoved me out of the closet and quickly stuffed the purse into a plastic bag. I felt like I had done something illegal. I also got a pink Prada purse and a wallet.
After the shopping, we went to Little Italy. Keith, Mary, Kirby, mom, and I ate at some Italian resturant(yeah surprise an Italian restaurant in Little Italy haha). The food was okay. I had fettucini alfredo, and it was messy. I got it all in my hair and stuff haha.
After that, we went into another purse store, and I asked about Dooney and Borke and the owner gave me instructions to this mans apartment and told me to ring the doorbell and request Nick. I decided that sounded a little bit too sketchy and didn't do it.
Before we left, a few of us went into this place and got this delicous hot chocolate. We saw either a celebrity or a hooker in there, we couldn't decide haha.
Okay, so after Chinatown, what happened? oh yeah.
We went to Times Square. My mom went into Sephora. EEEK! I thought the Sephora in Charlotte was cool..the one in NYC is Heaven. Huge. Wonderful. I didn't buy anything though haha. Then, we went into Toys R Us. If I was a kid, that would have been the best place in the world. There's a ferris wheel in there! Could NYC get better? nope it couldn't.
Then, I SAW THE NAKED COWBOY. It took a bit of begging to get my mom to let me get my picture with him. He was very nice actually haha. He knew that Columbia was the capital of South Carolina. haha.
After that, my mom and I headed to the hotel to get ready for that night. I wore my LPT dress that night. We saw Spamalot.
Now, I planned on HATING Spamalot. It's based on monty python and I don't care a/b that. But it is also a spoof of Broadway and musical theatre. It was WONDERFUL! Hilarious! Tim Curry was hilarious. David Hyde Peirce was brilliant. Sarah Ramirez is a vocal powerhouse, and I fell madly in love with Christian Borle. The show makes you feel happy, and as you stand up at the end and sing along 'Always look on the the bright side of life' there doesn't appear to be a dark side. I would suggest this show to anyone.
Afterwards, I waited at the stage door, and met Christian Borle(squee he was a sweetie and cute), David Hyde Peirce, and Tim Curry who stopped and posed for my camera. Yay. I also saw Kathleen Turner who wasn't in the show haha.
While we were waiting, we talked to this girl who goes to Columbia University, and she actually lived in Columbia,SC. What a small world.
After the show, Mary, Kirby, mom, and I headed over to the Jekyll and Hyde Club. You're supposed to enter through a scary entrance, but Mary and I got scared at the last minute, so they had to let us through the exit haha...losers. The food was mediocre. Our waiter was cool, Josh. He's in a band. I got a drink called The Elixir(don't worry it was non-alcoholic)..it was good.
After that, we headed back to the hotel. We were going to dessert, but ended up not. Slept well that night too.
That morning, I didn't do anything until lunch. My mom and I went to Sardis. YAY! I had picked up Show Business which is like an auditions newpspaer. I was reading it in Sardis, and the waiter asked me if I was an actress and I was like 'yeah' and he asked me if I was equity and I was like 'not yet'. It was cool. He was in Dame Edna. I asked if he would show me Kristin Chenoweth's characture. I was so excited. I started to giggle while looking at it.
After lunch, it was time. Time for what I've counted down to. The best thing ever. Little Women. To put it into words is impossible. The show. Oh my God. Brilliant. I cried. I laughed. I smiled. Sutton looked at me during 'Astonishing'. The cast was brilliant. The score was wonderful. Everything. I just can't even tell you. Gosh.
After the show, I headed to the stage door. Jim Weitzer(John Brooke) came out. He is quite georgous in a very 'rugged' way. He was uber nice. John Hickock(Proffessor Baeher) came out. He too was very very nice. John Stattell(Mr.Laurence) came out. He was nice. Danny Gurwin(Laurie) came out, I didn't meet him. And then we waited. Then we found out no one else was coming out. NO. I had to meet Sutton. My life depended on it..well maybe not, but I really wanted to.
On our way back to the hotel, Mary and Kirby attempted to cheer me up, but somehow the girls behind me talking about how they had just met the star of Wicked wasn't helping. We planned to go back after Chitty
Chitty Bang Bang.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Dreadful show. Mediocre score. Odd plot. Uninteresting for anyone who isn't a child. But the car was amazing. The set and lighting will win it Tonys. It cost them 20 million dollars to create that show, and I believe it, but the show itself was unimpressive.
After the show. We waited at the stage door. The men came out and recognized us. haha. Then, Megan Mcginiss(Beth) came out. She had broken her pinkie. She signed my poster, but my camera broke right then! AH. But fortunatly we fixed it, and she came back for a picture. Then it happened. You can guess. Sutton Foster came out. If you only learn one thing about me know this: Sutton Foster is my role model. She came out and headed the wrong way. Nooo, I couldn't let her get away. Cate and Hannah yelled at me to follow her, but I couldn't move. The security guard hinted at me that he would help, but just in case, I finally moved. Here:
me:Ms.Foster, will you please sign this?
Sutton: sure
*signs*
me: and could I get my picture with you?
Sutton: yes
*picture*
me: do you think that, that I could hug you?
Sutton: of course!
*hug*
me: you're my role model, thank you so so much
Sutton: the best of luck to you
AH! Yes. At that moment, I could have died happy. And guess who was waiting for her! Christian Borle from Spamalot. They walked off holding hands, aw. After Sutton left, I could have left too, but I wanted to meet everyone else. Unfortunatly the only other to come out was Janet Caroll(Aunt March).
After that, we walked to Planet Hollywood, but our group was leaving. So we went to..um. i don't remmeber the name. But I got a bacon cheeseburger and it was hella good.
I slept well that night too.
The next morning, we went to Harlem for our backstage tour of the Apollo Theatre. Our tour guide was really funny and entertaining, and it was very cool to go in there. We sat down, and some of us volunteered to get on stage and perform. It was all a very cool experience.
After that, we had our workshop. An ensemble member from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Sally Mae Dunn, taught us a dance from the show. It was fun, and to be honest I've never had more fun dancing. I guess because it was in NY and it was Broadway. Then we had a question and answer session with her, Roxanne Barlow(another DRS ensemble member), and 2 guys from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It was enlightening.
After the workshop, my mom and I ate at Roxy's. MMMM. Good Good food. Delicious cheesecake. YUM! Then we went to H&M , where I did serious damage.
That night, we saw Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. In the words of Sherie Rene Scott it's 'sophisticated naughtiness'. I loved it. Hilarious, great music. Physical and verbal comedy. Norbert Leo Butz stole my heart, and I want to marry him. John Lithgow hilarious. Sherie Rene Scott was wonderful, so was Joanna Gleason. A lot of people didn't like the show because of the maturity but I loved it.
The stage door was quick. Sherie's baby had a 103 fever so she was fast. Norbert and John were also fast and didnt stop for pictures. Sherie stopped for a picture with me, but cate didn't getthe picture, but kirby did so yay!
After that, we went to the Stardust Diner. That's where the waiters and waitresses sing! It's also 50s retro style..super fun. Some guy from Columbia works there and he sang Footloose to us..well not to me but to Columbians. It was fun.
I got to see Emily then. Aw I love Emily.
Then, my mom and I walked around Times Square once more. Sad.
The bus ride home wasn't as bad as the one there. Cate and Hannah created a super fun game for us to play at the Baltimore rest top.
Leaving NYC sucks. I miss it bad. but....
I'm in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. I'm a whisk/townsperson/singing column. Okay, so I'm not a lead. I'm still uber excited because 1. Friends are in it, 2. I'll be on stage, and 3. It's running for quite awhile.
So I really miss NYC. But I am also sooooo happy. Dreams don't seem so unattainable.
you can go to my picture album on webshots to see all the pictures, but here is the most important:
