I walk out of my tent the morning after the first day of battle, and I see the army of hellish creatures neyond, not making any attempts to near our camp in any way. I am still dressed in full armour, and I rest one of my palms on the hilt of my sword and walk to the top of a nearby hill as my black cape billows behind me.
My captain walks over to me, a look of concern on his face.
"What's the matter?" I ask.
"If we charge into battle again, our forces will not survive." he explains.
"Why?" I ask, puzzled.
"The foot soldier army of crimson armoured men was almost completely decimated. Our legion of horsemen was reduced to half of what it was before. If we rush them and attack like we did yesterday morning, we will all die for sure." he explains.
I nod. "Tell the archers to meet me beyond that hill after midday." I say, pointing to a nearby hill.
He nods and walks towards the group of tents where the archers rest. Their group of tents is much larger than ours, so I devised a plan.
If we can teach the archers to handle swords by the next time the beasts attack, then we might stand a chance of victory. They can pummel the advancing enemy with arrows until they get close enough for a sword. Then the rest of our forces will join them in battle and fight the enemy until they are defeated.
I glance down at the body covered field between our camp and the camp of the beasts.
The arcid stench of the rotting corpses is still in the air, so I turn and walk back towards my tent.
My love walks from the tent, dressed in full armour as well. I give her a quick kiss and we hold hands as we look out onto the battlefield.
"We will have to fight with everything we have in this next battle." I say, breaking the silence.
"I know." she replies.
I turn towards her and take her hands in mine.
"If we do not survive the battle..." I start. She silences me by placing one of her fingers over my mouth.
"No need for that. We will survive." she says. I smile and kiss her.
The sun rises to it's midday position, and the archers group by the hill where I told them to meet.
I join them.
The training begins.
