I follow the robed man along the narrow path through the forest until we reach a large, clear area, with a small army of men in black robes sitting in random places in the clearing.
"My brothers!" The robed man says, lifting his arms into the air to get their attention. They all look at him and pull their hoods back off their heads.
They recognize me and all stand in respect. I give them all nods of respect back.
"What do you people do here?" I ask. The robed man looks at me.
"We are a secret brotherhood dedicated to ridding the world of the scum that inhabits it. I other words, we each have an assigned town and we kill criminals in and around that town." he explains.
"And how do I fit into all of this?" I ask.
"By ridding the Dreamland of those hellish creatures, you saved us all, and ridded the Dreamland of the scum that inhabited it. For that, we all look up to you. That man you killed before you met me was also a serial killer, and you ridded that area of him, so they are now safe, although you are now considered a criminal for it." the man explains.
"And what do you want me to do?" I ask. He gives me a weak smile.
"We've brought you here to lead our little crusade." he says.
"You want me to lead you? You barely even know me." I say, and the small army walks towards me.
"We know who you are, and you know who we are. Will you lead us?" They all ask in unison.
"I will lead you." I say loudly, and then I hear the distant voices of the guards shouting and getting louder.
"They've found our trail." the robed man says, and the rest of the small army pulls out a bow and a quiver of arrows from within their robes.
They climb the trees around the clearing as the horde of guards led by my former love enters it.
"Found you." she says, and then points the tip of her sword at me.
She then rushes at me, the horde of guards following her. The robed men in the trees open up and pelt the oncoming horde with arrows until they all fall, several arrows in their heads or backs.
Only my former love remains, and I signal for them to not shoot her down.
She angrily slashes at me with her sword, and I quickly pull my own out to parry the attack.
"You killed him!" she growls, and then lashes out at me again.
"I killed a criminal." I say, forcing her sword into the ground.
"He was no criminal!" she shouts at me.
"Look at his records. The truth will be revealed to you." I say calmly. I step on her foot and backhand her across the face. Her head snaps to the side and she falls to the ground with a swollen cheekbone.
"I will kill you." she growls at me. I smirk.
"You couldn't attack me to kill me now. What makes you think you'll be able to do it later?" I ask.
"I will." she says.
"I'll be waiting." I sai, before putting my sword away and picking hers up. I angrily slam the blade to the ground in front of her face.
"Let's go." I say to my new small army of robed warriors, and together we walk from the clearing, leaving my former love lying there by herself, amid the dead guards.
I only hope that when she reads his records she will discover the truth.
And she will.
