The enemy's tracks were easy to find, and even easier to follow. I tracked them on foot through the wooded area of the region, but as soon as I would be seen by whatever amount of scouts they had left I flew high enough that they wouldn't see me.
I tracked them for almost two nights, when I reached a large fortress built of white stone, with black banners hanging over the ramparts. The fortress looked abandoned, possibly the direct result of all their troops being gone.
I landed softly on the ramparts, and hid in the shadows to make sure I wasn't seen. I darted from turret to turret, and eventually made my way to the main citadel of the fortress, where I heard Janet.
She was still furious about the loss she had suffered at the king's castle, and was yelling at her knight in charge. She was yelling loud enough at him that even a deaf man in the area could've heard what she had to say.
I laughed at the knight's suffering, but then something happened that I did not expect.
I leapt onto the balcony of Janet's chambers, and knelt in the shadows, and I saw her wrench her knight's helmet from his head and kiss him as though they had been lovers for years.
I drew my sword, eager to kill them both.
"Excuse me." I said with a raspy voice. I didn't emerge from the shadows, but I stayed in a crouched position so that I could see them but they couldn't see me.
"Where are you Marius?" Janet demanded, her eyes darting from her knight to the darkness.
The knight reached for the hilt of his sword.
"Don't try it." I said. The knight withdrew his hand from the hilt of his sword, and I emerged from the shadows.
"I'll see that you pay for this." Janet said, glaring at me.
"I'll see that you pay. You'll pay for all of the knights, guards and soldiers you killed. Especially my wife." I said, pointing the tip of my sword at the knight's throat.
Janet howled in laughter.
"We slaughtered all of your knights like the useless, insolent beings that they were!" she screamed, and then lunged at me with a knife that she pulled from her belt.
The blade of the knife gleamed with the vampire killing metal, so I backhanded the knife from her grasp and leapt backwards. The knight drew his sword and faced me.
I was shocked. The knight looked exactlty like me, only less pale and with shorter hair.
"What sort of trickery is this?" I demanded through gritted teeth.
"The darkest of magic. Creates a perfect clone of someone. I needed someone who was a good military commander and who could win battles." Janet explained, draping her arm over the knight's shoulders.
I snarled. "Then I'll kill you, and your evil creature, for you both do not deserve to live." I spat, and prepared for combat.
