Once upon a time there was a young girl named Sarah, who was the only child of Raguel of Media. When Sarah came of age age, her father gave her in marriage. On the night of her wedding, the demon Asmodai came into her bridal chamber and killed her new husband before they could consummate their marriage. The demon did this because he loved Sarah, and he did not want her to given to anyone else. He charmed her in her dreams, and whispered carefully in the back of her mind during the day. She refused the demon and his temptations only to be left alone six more times on her bridal bed.
She was ashamed of the demons love for her and swore that would hang herself, for she could not stand his constant harassment any longer. When the night came that she had prepared herself to be hanged she could not, for she did not want to shame her patient father any further. Instead she prayed for death, she prayed that if this demon could not be stricken from her, she would surely wish to die instead of living alone in constant fear of possession. Then she waited in depressed solitude, waited for God to answer.
One day a man called Tobias journeyed from Ninevah, and asked to marry Sarah. Her father warned him that she had taken seven husbands and each had been killed by a demon. The man claimed that he would not be killed, and Raguel agreed to marriage. In the bridal room, Tobias burnt the liver and heart of a fish, and when the demon smelled this he rose out of the room in disgust, only to be caught and taken to be imprisoned in Egypt by the angel Raphael.
Sarah and her husband successfully consummated their marriage, and she was finally free of Asmodai. And she forever after praised and thanked God for sending Tobias to save her.
