there's something about someone telling you that they like you that makes you scared out of your mind that one day they're going to say "my feelings have changed..." it doesnt matter if you like the person back or not, because sometimes it can be hard to handle the fact that whatever they found likable about you was just an illusion in their eyes and they've suddenly seen something in you that turns them away.
