All I had to do was read the headlines and shake my head in disgust.
"Cell Video Show Teacher Beating Students?" (What with the question mark on that headline? What the video wasn't enough proof? We have to question if she hit him? Oh the many things that cameras/cell phones have captured to prove innocence and to prove guilty. The things we wish we didn't have to see.)
"Columbine-style attack foiled by NY High School" (We learn history for the purpose of NOT repeating it. We got the wrong role models kids)
"Teacher accused of sex abuse takes the stand", "Verdict awaited on teachers molestation trial" "Teacher cleared of molestation 'Nobody wins'" "School Districts Face Budget Cuts", "NYC plans to cut 6,400 teacher jobs" "Teacher resigns after boxing pupil" "Teachers facing layoffs" (Who wants to be a teacher when they grow up?! I do I do! Who is studying to be a teacher right now? When I was in school our teachers could talk with us and didn't get sued for it...)
"Students don American flags, get sent home", "Students punished for wearing American flags" (That's right kids, all those cheap Old Navy shirts with flags on 'em, get rid of 'em. How do they 'punish' them? Corporal punishment? Bring up a whole other conflict? I..don't even know what to say to that.)
"Student sues to wear native garb at graduation" (Can't bring your same sex lover to senior prom. Can't talk to your teachers for fear of it being sexual. Can't sextext. Can't talk to your teachers on Facebook. Can't wear certain colors or symbols on your clothes.... a whole new list I didn't even think of when I was that age.)
"Lacrosse player admitts deadly beating" (hah Lacrosse is a violent sport in a way, what other crime would a lacrosse player commit? "I smothered him gently with a pillow" yeah uh huh)
"Cyberbullies terrorize students on Facebook" (Technology arms people with something new and lets the world do with it as they will. Who knew they could manipulate such technology so drastically.)
"Afghan girls scared away from school" (Need I say more about what this war has done to us?)
And my absolute favorite: "Family sues school because boy can't read" - hahahaha. Really?
In a world where we like to blame everyone else for our weaknesses, our mistakes, we sure can mess things up real good for other people.
Now, these are just some examples of things that WE do to EACH OTHER. These headlines are not natural disasters, not mishaps, not accidents, not ignorance, these are not things we cant control.
And yet, we are so out of control.
