So about four years ago my dad bought me my first cell phone as I graduated high school in 2006 mainly for the WY trip I was going on, not that it did any good cuz there was no reception out there in the middle of no where, but still, nice to have to call home when I could. My first one was a flip open and close type dealy. I got some bling bling to attach to it and it was all exciting. I think I dropped it to many times (not used to carrying it around aight) and I started using my Dads flip open phone for the last few months of my contract. That was kinda fun to switch to a different phone... Ya know, Back when postage was $.39 and gas was $1.19 or something, which now postage is $.44 and gas is like $1.80. The good ol' days when carrying a phone with you everywhere was kinda unique. (Okay okay it was only 4 years ago, but still times change quickly)
Then two years later (after contract was up and ready for upgrade) I got me an LG Glance, same thing as the first cept I didn't have to flip it open no more kinda got tired of that. Still has the number for the keyboard instead of the fancy slide out keyboard (actual keyboard with letters), no touchscreen, no interent, nothing big. The next phone I planned on was the Samsung slide up, slide the screen up to reveal the numbered keyboard to use for texting. Ya know those $50 rebate phones. You buy it for $50 and then send in your rebate and get $50 back, so basically free phones. I dont have much use for anything else and I dont really want to pay for anything else. I like the simple stuffs.
Well by 2010 everyone had full keyboards on their phone either slide out or touch screen and of course the interent to do facebook, myspace, and tweets. The infamous "Blackberry"and "Driod" phones. The phone companies competing against each other and the lengths they go to in order to gain more customers and the economic 'recession' we had going on there. Interesting times.
Anyway, Dad has slowly upgraded to different phones and when he got the phone with the internet we were all 'ohh' and 'ahh' and he had games on it and the slide out keyboard, actual letters instead of numbers trying to mix and match letters to make words. I never asked for any big and fancy phone A) cuz I didn't really need one and B) my dad was doing alot putting me on his plan and paying the bill, so I just coasted 4 years with what I got. He'd tell me to stop texting so much when I went over 200 texts and then the 500 and finally over the 1500 texts. I'd tell him that it was possible to do unlimited texting but he wouldn't look into it or try it even tho one of us was blowing the bill.
Well ever since Dad became the Bishop he's decided he's need more advanced technology. Mind you, thats more technology than he can handle/understand, but he feels it will help him in his service. He's now decided that we need unlimited texting. I guess it makes sense when HE needs it he'll do it otherwise everyone has gets to deal. So he decided to go by the Driod Incredible, top of the line, newest and greatest, and it just so happened to be a buy one get one free sale for the holidays. I'm not sure how much research he did on it before buying it.... but he decided since Mom refuses to learn new techonology that he'd give me the upgrade. Mom was due for the upgrade, so I stole her upgrade to get this free phone. So as of yesterday, me and Dad have Driod Incredible phones with Verizon.
We can call this an definite overload for Wednesday girl here.
Total touchscreen. No number pad, you actually have to tap a button to get a number pad to show. Touchscreen full keyboard that rotates that comes up pritti automatically. Internet, google, myspace, facebook, yadda yadda. Well those are the most confusing so far. I'm sure I'll run into more later. Most of these have symbols or pictures when I think words would help describe them a bit better. "What does this button do?"
It's always a lil' overwhelming to me to switch phones cuz I always get a reminder about how attached we are to our phones and how that information from the old phone is so vital to my existence now, I have to make sure I have all such information before switching lest I ...die! And its kinda sad to see something go you've been so attached to/relied upon go back in a box. That and its never usually as easy as just 'activating' the phone by doing *228. They wont listen to me cuz I'm not the primary on the account so Dad has to talk to them all the time, I think they know him by name now. hah. He calls a lot. He got the Driod cuz he tried another phone when he was due for an upgrade and he hated it so he returned it and is trying this phone out.
But new adventures/changes are fun and should be acknowledged at least every two years. And besides, it was free right? I just have to pay $30 a month instead of $15 now that I have the internet. I was paying that much when I was trying to limit myself to 1500 text messages. Pff. Now I'm all unlimited! My phone bill isnt to tragic, but his and all his new technology needs is making his balloon out of control. Funny, he didnt want to get unlimited when I suggested it cuz of the cost... now look what he's doing. Anyways, I didnt ask for this fancy phone, I'll prolly never use it to its full use and potential and/or learn how, but I kinda feel like I'm 'in the know', doing something popular. heh
If anything else I have something else to entertain me at work. Its fun to play with new phones.
Only slight mistake/stressful thing so far is the fact that I didnt have the internet on my old phone, so I couldn't put my contacts in a google account so I could export my contacts from old phone to new one. So I'm racing to get some numbers/names in my phone before ppl text me and I have some random number I dont know and I have to go through every contact in my old phone to find out who it is. Cuz ya know, in this day and age nobody knows anyones -actual- phone number, they have them already in their phone under names and speed dial, not so much numbers. Lose the phone, lose all yer numbers that you never had to memorize. Thankfully Dads number is the one I memorized, the only one I have memorized, but still, its a good idea. I wonder how many victims of crimes or car accidents there are and the police ask what family members to call and the victims dont know cuz they dont have their phone (stolen or crushed). Crazy. But as soon as I activated the phone, bam, text message, from some random number, ugh. I soo gotta fix that...and fast.
